About

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, also known as the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, is one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas and the largest Marian church in the city. Founded in 432 AD and consecrated by Pope Sixtus III in 434, it has served as a major pilgrimage site for centuries. The nave is famed for its magnificent Roman‑style mosaics from the 5th century, and the basilica houses the revered icon of the Salus Populi Romani. The interior features art by Bernini and other Renaissance masters and includes a magnificent Baroque façade designed by Ferdinando Fuga. Visitors can also explore the crypt of the Nativity and the ornamental Cappella Paolina, making the basilica an active place of worship and a major landmark for tourists.
