Bocca della Verita
About
Nestled in the heart of Rome’s historic Ripa district, the Bocca della Verità – the Mouth of Truth – is a captivating marble mask that has intrigued visitors for centuries. Believed to date back to the 4th century, the mask sits on the left wall of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin church, overlooking the ancient Forum Boarium. According to legend, anyone who lies while placing their hand inside the mouth will have it bitten off. Beyond its mythic appeal, the monument offers a fascinating glimpse into Roman artistry, possibly serving as a drain cover for the nearby Temple of Hercules Victor. Today, it remains one of Rome’s most photographed treasures and continues to draw tourists and locals alike, many of whom enjoy the playful test of honesty it provides.
