Catacombs of Saint Callixtus
About
The Catacombs of Saint Callixtus, located along the historic Appian Way, are the principal underground cemetery of the Church of Rome. Established in the 3rd century AD, the complex once served as a burial ground for over half a million Christians, including martyrs and sixteen popes. Today, the site, under the stewardship of the Salesian Fathers, offers guided tours that delve deep into early Christian history and art. Visitors can experience the crypt of the Popes, the cubicles of the sacraments, and the crypt of St. Gaius and St. Eusebius, each richly adorned with frescoes and inscriptions that chronicle the early Church’s life and devotion. The catacombs remain a profound pilgrimage destination and a living museum, offering insights into the faith, art, and culture that shaped the origins of Christianity in Rome.
