Forum of Augustus
About
The Forum of Augustus, or Forum Augustum, is a striking fragment of Rome’s Augustan urban renewal. Built by Augustus to house the Temple of Mars Ultor and provide a new space for legal and ceremonial functions, the forum was inaugurated in 2 BC, forty years after Augustus first vowed to construct it. The complex, though never fully completed, features a grand colonnade, triumphal arches added by Tiberius in 19 AD, and the imposing Temple of Mars, which remains the most prominent surviving element. Today the site offers visitors a tangible glimpse into the ceremonies and public life of early Imperial Rome, with its stone columns, arches, and hilltop vistas overlooking the ancient city’s heart. Its open, archaeological character makes it a quiet yet profound stop for history enthusiasts and culture‑savvy travelers alike.
