About

Lake Albano is a striking volcanic crater lake nestled in the Alban Hills, just 20 kilometres southeast of Rome. Covering 6 km² and plunging to a maximum depth of 170 metres, it is the deepest lake in Lazio and offers dramatic cliffs, walkways and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The lake, once known to the Romans as Albanus Lacus, has a rich history—its waters rose in a legendary flood and it served as the venue for canoeing and rowing during the 1960 Summer Olympics. Visitors can enjoy gentle shore-side walks, water‑based activities, and the intriguing underground drainage tunnel, an ancient Roman engineering marvel that once helped tame the lake’s floods.
