Fortezza del Priamar
About
The Priamar Fortress, located on a commanding hill above Savona’s bustling port, is one of Italy’s most evocative historical landmarks. Constructed in 1542 by the Republic of Genoa, the fortress has witnessed the rise and fall of medieval kingdoms, the intrigues of the Rococo era, and the turbulence of the Risorgimento. It served as a formidable military citadel, then a notorious prison that held figures such as Giuseppe Mazzini, and eventually became a cultural hub. Today, the fortress houses the Civic Archaeological Museum, the Sandro Pertini and Renata Cuneo Museum, a congress centre in the Palazzo della Sibilla, and a grand 600‑seat theatre on the Piazzale del Maschio. Reopened to the public in June 2020 after a pandemic‑induced closure, the site welcomes visitors year‑round with guided tours, exhibitions, and live events that bring the fortress’s storied past to vivid life. A stroll through its terraces offers sweeping views of the Ligurian Sea, while its preserved fortifications and stone walls narrate tales of resilience and artistry. The Priamar Fortress is a must‑visit for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the layered heritage of northern Italy – all accessible at no entrance fee and open daily from 9 am to 6:30 pm.
