Walls of Monteriggioni
About
The Walls of Monteriggioni form a nearly complete medieval circle around a Lombard hilltop town in the Tuscan countryside. Built by the Sienese between 1213 and 1219, the 570‑metre wall is punctuated by 14 square‑topped watchtowers, two grand gates—Porta Fiorentina toward Florence and Porta Romana toward Rome—and a narrow inner street that links the portals. Inside, the piazza dominated by a Romanesque church hosts cafes and markets, while the tower view points provide panoramic vistas of the surrounding valley. A stroll along the walls offers tangible glimpses into 13th‑century military architecture and a relaxed pace for families, history lovers, and architecture enthusiasts. The site is free to enter, providing an affordable and immersive experience for all ages. The walls also carry literary and pop‑culture resonance: Dante Alighieri celebrated them in the Divine Comedy, and the fortress inspired key scenes in the Assassin’s Creed video game series.
