Villa d'Este
About
Villa d'Este is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Tivoli, about 30 kilometers from Rome. The 16th‑century Renaissance villa was commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este and is famous for its terraced gardens, more than 50 elaborate fountains, and its architectural elegance that prefigured European landscape design. Visitors wander through arcades, grottos and the famed "Hundred Fountains", while the lawned terraces offer panoramic views of the Roman countryside. The gardens are highlighted by the iconic Oval Fountain, the majestic Hundred Fountains, the dramatic Fountain of the Dragons and the music‑making Fountain of the Organ, where a water organ plays classical pieces. Inside the villa, richly frescoed rooms and monumental staircases showcase the artistic talents of masters such as Livio Agresti and Federico Zuccari. The site combines natural splendour with human ingenuity, making it a must‑visit destination for history and art lovers alike.
