About

The Faro di Leuca, also known as the Capo Santa Maria di Leuca Lighthouse, is a historic beacon perched on the southernmost tip of Italy’s Apulia region. Constructed in 1864 and first lit on 6 September 1866, the brick tower rises to a height of approximately 48 metres (157 ft). Its hexagonal prism design, crowned with a balcony and lantern, is both architecturally distinctive and functional, serving as a vital navigational aid for ships traversing the Adriatic and Ionian seas. The lighthouse remains fully operational, managed by Marina Militare. Its main light emits a triple white flash every 15 seconds, visible up to 24 nautical miles (44 km), while a steady red occulting light alerts vessels to the shallow shoal to the east. Together, these signals help keep mariners safe along this complex stretch of coastline. For visitors, the site offers sweeping vistas of the surrounding sea and a tangible connection to Italy’s maritime heritage. Though no visitor centre or guided tours are described, the expansive open area surrounding the lighthouse allows for leisurely strolls and photo opportunities, making the Faro di Leuca a rewarding stop for history enthusiasts, photographers, and maritime lovers alike.
