About

Grotta Gigante, known as the "Giant Cave," is the world’s largest show cave on Italian soil. Located in the municipality of Sgonico near Trieste, its central cavern reaches an impressive 107 metres (351 ft) in height, 130 metres (430 ft) in length and 65 metres (213 ft) in width, making it a record‑holding natural arena for visitors. Inside the cave, visitors can marvel at a profusion of stalactites and stalagmites, including a spectacular "dish‑pile" formation created by water falling from up to 80 metres. In addition to its geological wonders, the cave hosts two of the world’s longest geodetic pendula—horizontal pendulums hanging approximately 100 metres (330 ft) from the floor—providing a living example of scientific research. Guided walks are available throughout the day and typically last about an hour, offering expert commentary on the cave’s geology and history. Beyond its natural grandeur, Grotta Gigante is a landmark of cultural heritage. The adjacent Museum of Speleology showcases a rich collection of speleological finds, while the site’s infrastructure supports visitors in a well‑planned, year‑round environment. Whether one is enthralled by awe‑striking geology, fascinated by enduring scientific instruments, or simply looking for a unique adventure away from the bustle of city life, Grotta Gigante provides an unforgettable journey beneath the earth’s surface.
