Kleine Berlin
About
Kleine Berlin is the largest underground anti‑aircraft tunnel system still in existence in central Trieste, Italy. Built during World War II, it comprises two interlinked networks: a civilian shelter designed to protect Triestine residents, and a German SS‑owned storage and bunker complex. Today, the site is operated as a war‑history museum that offers immersive guided tours through its concrete galleries and tunnels. Guided visits take place every last Friday of the month at 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.; prior reservation by email is mandatory, and the museum welcomes larger groups (15 people or more) with tours arranged Monday to Friday. The museum remains closed on weekends and public holidays. Although admission is charged, the experience offers a unique glimpse into wartime life, featuring original equipment, ventilation systems, and illuminated maps of the subterranean layout. Visitors can walk through both the Italian and German sections, discovering how civilians and SS troops used the tunnels for protection and logistics. The curated exhibits detail Trieste’s strategic importance on the Adriatic coast and the daily realities of the wartime population. Overall, Kleine Berlin presents a compelling narrative of resilience and military ingenuity, with guided tours that piece together history for travelers seeking depth in a historic European city.
