Škocjan Caves (Slovenian: Škocjanske jame) are a stunning karst cave system and UNESCO World Heritage Site located near Škocjan, Slovenia. Spanning over 6,200 metres of mapped passage, the caves form an impressive underground river that is the longest karst watercourse in Europe, as well as the largest discovered underground chamber, Martel’s Chamber. In 1999 the site was designated a Ramsar wetlands of international importance, underscoring its ecological significance. Visitors embark on guided tours of the main galleries—Big Collapse Doline, Little Collapse Doline and Martel’s Chamber—available in Slovenian, English, Italian and German. The tour offers a blend of natural wonder and cultural heritage, providing educational panels, interactive exhibits and real‑time views of the subterranean river during high‑water events.
