Ponte del Diavolo
About
The Devil’s Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo) is a 15th‑century stone arch that famously spans the Natisone River in the historic town of Cividale del Friuli. Originally powered by a wooden passage in the 1400s, the stone bridge was reconstructed in 1501 and upgraded in 1918 after a wartime explosion. Its towering stone pylons and elegant arch frame the river, drawing visitors toward the scenic promenade on the left bank where one can stroll and enjoy panoramic views of the town and the surrounding hills. The bridge is steeped in legend, most notably the tale that the Devil helped complete the structure overnight in exchange for the soul of the first passerby. Today, the bridge remains a cherished landmark, preserved and reinforced to withstand the river’s floods, and offers a free, open‑to‑public gateway for history lovers and casual wanderers alike.
