Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci
About
The Riserva Naturale di Punta Aderci, located along the coast of Abruzzo, is a pristine dune ecosystem that showcases the dynamic interplay between sand, wind, and vegetation. Its dunes rise to more than 10 metre, creating a mosaic of habitats ranging from the bare intertidal zone up to stabilized dune summits shaded by Mediterranean shrubs. The flora is dominated by psammophilous species such as *Cakile maritima*, *Ammophila arenaria*, and *Silene* varieties, each adapted to the harsh, salty, and shifting environment. These plants not only stabilize the sand but also provide shelter for a diverse array of fauna, from small arthropods to ground‑nesting birds. The reserve offers a unique opportunity to observe these natural processes in situ. Visitors can explore marked trails that cross the dune ridges and follow the succession zones, from the early colonisation by pioneer grasses to the mature, dense vegetation that caps the dunes. Watch for rare flora, study the adaptation strategies of the plant species, and learn how human activities such as road construction can threaten this delicate balance. Access is free of charge, and there is no mandatory booking required. The site is open to the public year‑round, but the best times to visit are during late spring and early autumn when the weather is mild and the dunes are less crowded by summer beach‑goers. For more information, visitors can contact the reserve office at 334 629 0593. The office is located at Contrada Collalto 1, 65017 Penne (PE), and serves both tour guidance and research inquiries.
