Cat House
About
The Cat House (Latvian: Kaķu nams) is an iconic Art‑Nouveau building perched at 10 Meistaru Street in Riga’s Old Town. Designed by Friedrich Scheffel and completed in 1909, the façade showcases medieval motifs blended with decorative elements typical of the period. Its most celebrated feature is the pair of copper‑steel cats that perch on its turrets, their tails turned toward the former Great Guild house—a bold architectural statement of a disgruntled entrepreneur’s defiance. Over the decades the cats have become a beloved symbol of Riga, attracting visitors who marvel at the craftsmanship and the storied legend that inspired them. Walking around the ground floor offers a glimpse into the city’s layered history, while the streets around provide a serene backdrop for those eager to learn more about the building’s unique design and cultural significance.
