About

The Freedom Monument (Latvian: Brīvības piemineklis) stands proudly in the heart of Riga’s Old Town, a granite and travertine column topped by a copper statue of Liberty holding three gilded stars. Unveiled on 18 November 1935, the monument commemorates soldiers who fell during the Latvian War of Independence and has since become a symbol of Latvia’s sovereignty, unity, and freedom. Designed by sculptor Kārlis Zāle, the 42‑metre high structure is divided into thirteen sculptural groups that portray scenes from Latvian history and culture. The monument sits in a pedestrianised plaza on Brivibas Boulevard, surrounded by historic buildings, cafes, and the National Opera House, creating a vibrant urban setting that is accessible to visitors year‑round. Visitors can stroll around the monument, view the towering statue from below, and learn about its history through informational plaques. Although there is no entrance fee or special opening hours, the plaza is open whenever the city is, making it an ideal stop for a quick cultural detour during any day of the year.
