About
Laisvės Alėja, translating to Liberty Avenue, is the longest pedestrian boulevard in Eastern Europe and a focal point of Kaunas’s cultural life. The 1.6‑kilometre stretch winds through the Old Town, linking St. Michael the Archangel’s church with the Central Post Office and the Tadas Ivanauskas Zoological Museum. With vehicle traffic prohibited, the avenue offers a safe, shaded promenade lined with linden trees, cafés, boutique shops, and cultural institutions such as the State Musical Theatre and National Kaunas Drama Theatre. Seasonal festivals, street performances, and summer markets enliven the boulevard, making it a popular gathering place for both locals and visitors.
