Situated on the outskirts of Rabat, lies a Church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and one of Malta's most iconic buildings, the Dominican Priory of the Order of Malta. The site is built upon the legend of an apparition of Our Lady that occurred around the year 1400. Today the cloister offers a beautiful ecclesiastical museum, and an audio visual theatre, where visitors can learn more about the life and history of St Dominic, his Order of Preachers, and their influence on the history of the island. This priory serves as the motherhouse for the Dominican Order in Malta, and also provides a center for hosting cultural programs, events, and lectures. The central garden of the priory has also been captured in the popular TV series Game of Thrones, and the movie Midnight Express. Private tours are also available upon request.
