Fort Rinella
About
Fort Rinella – the world’s largest armored cannon and a living theatre of 19th‑century military life – sits quietly on Malta’s Kalkara peninsula near Siren’s Bay. Built between 1878 and 1886, the battery’s single 100‑ton Armstrong gun remains the only surviving example of its kind. Each annual firing takes place at 14:00 and is accompanied by live‑action re‑enactments of Victorian soldiers in full uniform, complete with drills, rifle volleys and the thunder of cannon smoke. Guided tours run throughout the year from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:00, and feature audio‑visual installations in 14 languages, hand‑carried period weapons, and interactive exhibits. Visitors can even try firing a musket or sponsor a ceremonial cavalry horse. The complex also houses the underground War Headquarters tunnels that opened in 1940 – used by the Allied services during the Siege of Malta. These tunnels are now offered as exclusive guided tours twice a day, with a €17 ticket. Between May and September visitors experience the best weather and the lightest crowds, making this a prime time for families and history enthusiasts alike.
