About
Fort Saint Elmo is a historic star‑shaped fortification on the tip of the Sciberras Peninsula in Valletta. Built in the 16th century by the Order of Saint John and later modified by the British, it has witnessed major battles such as the Great Siege of 1565 and the 1940 aerial bombardment by Italy. Today the fort houses the National War Museum, which displays a broad range of military artefacts from the Bronze Age to the Union with the EU, including the famous Gloster Sea Gladiator, a Willys Jeep “Husky” and the George Cross awarded to Malta. The site offers visitors an impressive blend of architecture, history, and open‑air exhibitions within its well‑preserved bastions and chapels.
