Ggantija Archaeological Park
About
The Ġgantija Archaeological Park, situated on the Xagħra plateau of Gozo, is the world’s second‑oldest man‑made religious site and a living testament to Neolithic ingenuity. Dating back to c. 3600–3200 BC, the complex, which hosts two fully excavated temples and the façade of a third, showcases a remarkable clover‑leaf layout, large apses and sophisticated stone masonry built before the advent of metal tools or the wheel. The temples’ orientation toward the southeast aligns with the equinox sunrise, underscoring their ceremonial purpose. Managed by Heritage Malta, the park is accompanied by a modern Interpretation Centre that offers visitors a guided journey through Malta’s prehistoric past. The centre houses artifacts recovered from Ggantija and other Neolithic sites, while interactive displays help illuminate daily life, religious practices and the advanced engineering of the time. Visitors of all ages will appreciate the park’s accessibility, the variety of freely available on‑site informational panels, and the opportunity to walk along well‑maintained pathways that reveal layers of history right in front of their feet. Whether you’re a history buff, a family on a cultural excursion, or a curious traveller, Ggantija promises an immersive window into an era that continues to fascinate scholars and tourists alike. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, Ggantija remains an essential stop for those exploring the rich tapestry of Maltese prehistory and the broader megalithic heritage of the Mediterranean.
