Lascaris War Rooms
About
The Lascaris War Rooms is a remarkable underground complex of tunnels and chambers located beneath the Upper Barracca Gardens and the Saluting Battery in Valletta, Malta. Built between 1940 and 1943, it served as the British War Headquarters for the defence of Malta during World War II, and later as a NATO command centre until 1977. Today it operates as a museum, welcoming the public to explore its authentic wartime rooms, including the RAF Sector Fighter Control Room, the Anti‑aircraft Gun Operations Room, the Filter Room, and the Operation Headquarters that coordinated Malta’s strategic campaigns. The complex also hosts the dedicated Operation Husky Exhibition, which portrays Sicily’s 1943 invasion through original artefacts and immersive audio‑visual displays. Free admission is available to members of the Malta Heritage Trust, while general visitors can purchase tickets online for €20 (Adult), €7 (Child), €19 (Senior) or €35 (Family). Visitors benefit from free Wi‑Fi, multilingual audio guides, accessible toilets, lockers, baby‑changing facilities, and a child‑friendly café. The site is open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm, with last admission at 4:00 pm, and is closed on major public holidays. The Lascaris War Rooms offers a unique, immersive window into Malta’s WWII history, making it a must‑visit destination for history enthusiasts, families, educational groups, and military‑history lovers alike.
