About

The Malta Maritime Museum sits within the historic Ex‑Naval Bakery in Birgu (Vittoriosa), one of the oldest maritime cities in the Mediterranean. The building, originally the galley arsenale of the Knights of St John, was later the Royal Navy’s key supply depot during the British colonial era. In 1992 the museum opened to showcase over 1,200 artifacts spanning Malta’s 3,200‑year seafaring heritage, from ancient sea‑crafting to the naval battles of the twentieth century. Visitors can expect to see the world‑recorded largest Roman anchor, the earliest documented ex‑voto, the massive ship model of the Order of St John, a rich collection of cannons, a Napoleonic figure head from HMS Hibernia, and a working 1950s marine steam engine. The museum is currently under temporary closure as part of a major redevelopment project aimed at revitalising the historic site into a world‑class cultural venue. The new design will weave modern technology with centuries of nautical history, offering immersive displays and educational programmes for all ages. Once reopened, the Malta Maritime Museum will once again serve as a key destination for history enthusiasts, military‑history lovers, and cultural travellers seeking to explore Malta’s deep maritime roots.
