Mosta Rotunda
About
SANTA MARIA BAZILICA – The Mosta Rotunda is Malta’s iconic 55‑metre‑high domed church, renowned as the third largest unsupported dome in the world. Perched on Rotunda Square in the charming town of Mosta, the basilica offers visitors sweeping views of the Maltese countryside from its elevated spire. Inside, the richly painted interior showcases works by local artists such as Giuseppe Calì, Garu Antoni and others, while a replica of the 1942 bomb that famously cracked the dome remains a striking exhibit. The church’s history dates back to the 19th century, with its bell tower and twin bays completed in 1887. The Rotunda also hosts regular religious services, cultural events and community gatherings, making it a vibrant hub of Maltese faith and heritage. Visitors can explore the sacristies, admire the intricate statues and mosaics, or attend the live‑streamed masses available from the church website. The entrance is free, encouraging pilgrims and tourists to experience the rich architectural and artistic heritage without cost.
