St Paul's Catacombs
About
St Paul’s Catacombs, located in the historic Rabat quarter of Malta, are one of the island’s most remarkable early Christian burial sites. The subterranean complex consists of a network of narrow, rock‑cut chambers and passageways that date back to the 4th century AD, illustrating the transition from Roman paganism to Christianity. Guided walks take visitors through a series of small tombs, hypogea, and crypts, revealing the modest but poignant resting places of early Maltese Christians who sought shelter during periods of persecution. Although the catacombs are relatively small, their preservation is exceptional, with faint wall motifs, stone coffins, and occasional mosaics that offer a rare window into the artistic and funerary customs of the time. In addition to their archaeological value, the site provides a unique, intimate experience that connects travelers to the island’s ancient spiritual heritage.
