Valletta City Gate
About
The Valletta City Gate, or Bieb il‑Belt, serves as the grand entrance to the fortified capital of Malta. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the contemporary gate was built between 2011 and 2014 and replaces a succession of earlier openings that have stood since the 16th century. The present structure incorporates a dramatic breach in the historic bastions, flanked by massive stone blocks and steel pylons that echo the grandeur of the city’s Baroque architecture. In 2020, the gate was incorporated into the Parliamentary complex, and the surrounding Freedom Square now hosts the Parliament House and an open‑air theatre. Visitors can walk across the pedestrian plaza, which features the Triton Fountain, and admire the interaction between Piano’s minimalist design and the medieval fortifications that have sheltered Valletta for over four centuries.
