War HQ Tunnels
About
The War HQ Tunnel, situated on Battery Street in Valletta, offers visitors an unforgettable journey into Malta’s wartime heritage. Originally constructed in 1940 to serve as the combined war headquarters of the British armed forces, the underground complex remained in operation through the Cold War until 1977. Today, visitors can explore its subterranean chambers, the fighter sector operations rooms, and the adjoining Saluting Battery, a historic seaside battery overlooking the Grand Harbour. Guided tours are available every day at 10:30 am and 1:00 pm, each lasting two hours and including a visit to the Saluting Battery and the St. Peter & Paul Counter‑guard. Tickets can be purchased online and start at €5 for children aged 5–15, €15 for adults, and are free for members. With its blend of military history, engineering marvels, and panoramic harbour views, the War HQ Tunnel is a must‑visit destination for history enthusiasts, families, and travelers eager to experience Malta’s strategic past.
