Crno Lake
About
Crno Jezero, known in English as Black Lake, is a glacial lake situated in northern Montenegro's Durmitor National Park, just 3 km from the town of Žabljak. The lake is a unique two‑body water system, comprising a larger 'Big Lake' (Veliko jezero) and a smaller 'Little Lake' (Malo jezero) connected by a narrow strait that often dries in summer, creating two separate bodies. The lake sits at an altitude of 1,416 m (4,646 ft) on the slopes of Mount Durmitor and is fed by numerous mountain streams, the most notable being Mlin Creek. The surrounding dense pine forest gives the water a striking dark blue, almost black, appearance that has earned the site its name. A 3.5 km circuit walks the perimeter, offering panoramic views, while several hiking trails branch off to nearby lakes and peaks. Local visitors enjoy picnicking, fishing in designated areas, and dining at the Katun restaurant, which serves traditional Montenegrin cuisine. Crno Jezero remains one of Durmitor’s most visited attractions, celebrated for its pristine wilderness and breathtaking scenery.
