The Tara River Canyon, stretching over 82 kilometres (51 miles) between Montenegro and Bosnia‑Herzegovina, is the deepest canyon in continental Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to its striking natural scenery and ecological importance. The canyon’s emerald‑green waters, vertical cliffs up to 1,300 metres (4,300 ft) high, and a multitude of rapids—ranging from Category 2 to 4—make it a world‑class destination for adventure sports, especially whitewater rafting. Besides adventure activities, the canyon offers spectacular hiking routes, birdwatching opportunities, and a rare glimpse into the region’s rich cultural history, with ancient Roman roads and historic bridges dotting the landscape.
