Oostvaardersplassen
About
The Oostvaardersplassen is a 56‑km² wetland nature reserve in Flevoland, Netherlands, forming part of the New Land National Park. It boasts broad reedbeds, water meadows, and open grasslands that attract a wealth of waterfowl, waders, and raptors—including white‑tailed eagles and sea eagles—making it a premier birdwatching destination. The reserve is managed as a rewilding experiment: large herbivores such as Konik horses, red deer and Heck cattle graze freely, permanently shaping the habitat. Visitors can explore the area via a network of walking trails, observation points, and the visitor centre at the Buitencentrum, offering an engaging experience for families, nature lovers, and wildlife photographers alike.
