Hortus Botanicus
About
Hortus Botanicus, located in the Plantage district of Amsterdam, is one of the world’s oldest botanical gardens, having been founded in 1638 as the city’s first medicinal herb garden. The garden has grown through the centuries, accumulating a diverse and historically significant collection of plant species—including the famed Persian ironwood tree and a wide array of tropical and temperate plants housed in historically important greenhouses such as the Palm House and the Hugo de Vries Laboratory. Today, Hortus Botanicus continues to serve as a centre for botanical research, cultural heritage and public enjoyment. Visitors can stroll through its meticulously curated herbarium, explore the climatic displays in the tropical greenhouses, and admire centuries‑old architectural gems that weave the history of Dutch horticulture into the everyday experience. Special events, guided tours, and the seasonal “Hortus Winter Evenings” ensure that the garden remains a dynamic, year‑round destination for both locals and tourists.
