About

For centuries, the inhabitants of Zandvoort led a scant existence. Life consisted mainly of fish and the trading of the proceeds. The men brought the catch ashore and the women transported the fish via a long, mul, sandy path to Haarlem. The tired fishermen wives took a well-deserved break at the 'Kousenpaal' halfway through the tour. At De Blinkert and the old inn Kraantje Lek was also reassured. In Haarlem, the women stole their goods from the houses or the fish market. In 1881, 300 of these 'fishers' came to the city every day. On the way back, the fishermen wives took a alcoholic drink at 't Wapen van Kennemerland. Because of the fish buckets that were waiting outside, this pub got the nickname 'The Smelly Bucket'.
