About

Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s most beloved green oasis, spanning 47 hectares of lush lawns, winding paths, sculptures and a picturesque pond. Originally opened as the “New Park” in 1865, it was renamed after the playwright Joost van den Vondel in 1880. The park is open year‑round and is free to enter, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Key attractions include the open‑air theatre, which hosts concerts and performances from June to August, the historic Joost van den Vondel statue and the striking “Fish” sculpture by Pablo Picasso. Within the park you’ll find a playground, cafés such as ’t Blauwe Theehuis and a variety of bike‑friendly routes that weave through the landscaped gardens. Vondelpark is especially lively during the Netherlands’ summer festivals and the King’s Day celebrations in April, but the park’s serene pathways and tranquil pond make it a peaceful retreat any time of year.
