About

Water, wind, and Sails The Molenviergang Aarlanderveen is unique. It’s the world’s only system of water mills that still works, slowly but surely moving the surplus water from a deep polder into the Oude Rijn river. The entire process only involves sails and wind, as well as four expert millers. There are several bike routes through the Groene Hart area that pass near the Molenviergang. A nice place to hop off your bike and see the workings of the old Holland polder mills from up close. Feel the polder’s damp earth beneath your feet; watch how wind and sails drain the water out of a deep polder, no less than 5.4 m below sea level (NAP).
