Dutch Pinball Museum
About
The Dutch Pinball Museum, nestled in the historic Delfshaven quarter of Rotterdam, is a playground for gaming enthusiasts and curious travelers alike. With a rotating collection of more than 160 pinball machines that span from the 1930s to the present day, visitors can experience everything from classic electromechanical tables to the latest dot‑matrix and solid‑state designs—including rare treasures like the 1853 Toupie Hollandaise, the predecessor to modern pinballs. The museum’s layout places the older, flipper‑based machines on the ground floor, while newer models occupy the upper levels, all arranged in thematically decorated rooms that celebrate the evolution of pinball technology. The museum was founded by passionate collector Gerard van de Sanden and opened its doors on 29 August 2015, officially inaugurated by former Dutch Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm on 26 November 2015. Originally located on the Paul Nijghkade in Katendrecht, it relocated in 2023 to the refurbished Dubbele Palmboom, a historic building that once housed a tuna cannery. The Dutch Pinball Museum’s commitment to preserving the legacy of pinball earned it the 2024 TWIPY (This Week in Pinball) award for "Best Location Europe," a testament to its enthusiasm and expertise. Beyond the thrills of pinball, the museum offers a welcoming atmosphere for all ages. Every machine is playable, and the staff—many of whom are knowledgeable historians and technicians—are ready to explain the intricacies of each table. Accessibility is a priority, with ramps, audio guides, and play‑by‑phone options for guests with disabilities. After a heart‑pounding session, guests can relax at the on‑site café, sampling local snacks and beverages while reflecting on their gaming adventures. For families, couples, or solo travelers, the Dutch Pinball Museum provides an unforgettable, interactive journey through the history of arcade gaming in a stylish, historic setting.
