Vuurtoren Ameland
About
The Vuurtoren Ameland is a magnificent 55‑metre lighthouse perched on the Dutch island of Ameland. Built in 1880, the tower once served as a coastal guard post, but today it functions as an open‑air exhibition space welcoming visitors to explore its historic halls, original signal lantern, and the stories of former keepers. Guests can climb the 236‑step staircase to reach the upper gallery, where they enjoy panoramic, 360‑degree views of the North Sea and surrounding islands. The lighthouse’s iconic light beams still rotate, firing three bright flashes every 15 seconds, allowing visitors to witness a living piece of maritime technology. The museum also houses interactive displays detailing lighthouse history, navigation, and the island’s natural environment, making it a fascinating stop for families, history enthusiasts, lighthouse lovers, and nature fans alike. Dogs are not permitted, but service animals are welcome. The lighthouse is open to the public throughout most of the year, with extended hours in the summer months and a modest admission fee.
