Tsar Samuel's Fortress
About
Tsar Samuel's Fortress, perched on a 100‑metre hill above Lake Ohrid, is one of the most imposing medieval fortifications in the Balkans. Originally erected in the 4th century B.C. by King Philip II, it was rebuilt by the powerful Serbian king, Tsar Samuel, in the 11th century and later fortified through Roman, Byzantine, Slavic and Ottoman periods. The fortress’s walls stretch nearly 3 km, enclosing a citadel that houses the upper palace, multiple gates, and a network of towers. Today, the fortress is a major tourist attraction that offers panoramic views of Ohrid and the lake. Visitors walk through its ancient walls, explore its well‑preserved gates, and learn about the fortress’s role as the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire under Tsar Samuel. The site has been extensively restored, with a combination of original medieval masonry and modern reinforcements that allow safe exploration. The fortress is open to the public and is maintained by the Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture and Museum in Ohrid. It provides a unique glimpse into the region’s layered history and a memorable visual experience for all ages.
