The history of the fort: After the Swedish-Norwegian union was dissolved in 1905, Norway had to accept demolishing the border fortifications, and the establishing of a de-militarized zone along the Swedish border. During 1906 the guns were removed, and the forts destroyed. The Norwegian defence to the east suddenly was merely a number of open artillery positions along the west bank of Glomma River. Høytorp fort Buildt 1912-1918. This was the main fort of the fortress, with section command staff, 21. fortress company and 1. signal platoon, in all ca. 850 troops at mobilization. Armament: Four turret guns, four howitzers, eight field guns, and a number of heavy machine guns. Strong, underground positions with ca. 1100 m tunnels and passages. Surrounded by 10 m wide barbed wire barrages. Connections to bridge galleries and Trøgstad fort by underground telephone cables. The first commanding officer, Colonel O.E. Jølsen, was accredited in 1915.
