About

Saltstraumen is a world‑renowned tidal maelstrom located in the small strait between the islands of Straumøya and Knaplundsøya, 10 km southeast of the town of Bodø in Nordland County, Norway. The narrow channel connects Saltfjorden to Skjerstad Fjord, and every six hours a torrent of water rushes through the 3 km stretch, creating powerful whirlpools that can reach 10 m in diameter and 16 ft in depth. For visitors the spectacle can be safely observed from the high‑deck observation platform on the Saltstraumen Bridge, as well as from the nearby coastlines and viewpoints. The maelstrom is a favorite for photographers, marine enthusiasts and adventure seekers, drawing crowds during the sunny summer months. Safety precautions include staying on the designated viewing points and avoiding close proximity to the water during peak currents. While casual walking around the bridge is permitted, kayakers and boats are generally restricted near the most turbulent sections. The best times to witness the maelstrom are just before or after high tide, typically between 10 and 20 knot currents, which occur twice daily. Early afternoon during summer offers pleasant weather and fewer crowds, while late autumn provides a dramatic, misty backdrop. A typical visit lasts about two hours, allowing time for a walk across the bridge, photos from the viewpoint, and a quick stop at the nearby visitor centre for information on local wildlife and maritime history.
