Viking Ship Museum
About
The Viking Ship Museum (Vikingskipshuset) in Oslo was a world‑renowned museum that housed three extraordinary Viking‑age ships – the Oseberg, Gokstad, and Tune vessels – alongside thousands of artifacts that chronicle the Viking era. The museum has been closed for extensive redevelopment and will reopen in 2027 as the new Museum of the Viking Age, a purpose‑built facility that will comfortably accommodate the historical ships, a vast collection of artifacts, and modern research laboratories. Visitors can still view selected Viking treasures in the nearby Historical Museum while the new complex is being built. Until the grand reopening, the original museum remains closed; the relocated ships will be safeguarded in climate‑controlled, vibration‑free environments, and the new venue will offer expanded exhibition space, a café, lecture hall, research centre, and visitor park. The site will become Scandinavia’s premier destination for exploring Viking history, drawing scholars, families, and solo travellers alike.
