Grob Nieznanego Zolnierza
About
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier stands as a solemn tribute to Polish soldiers who lost their lives in defence of the nation. Located at Piłsudski Square in Warsaw, the monument rests beneath the remnants of the Saxon Palace and houses the body of an unidentified soldier from the Battle of Lwów, dating back to 1925. Eternal flames light the site at all times, while a small guard post ensures continuous vigilance and ceremonial duties. Every hour, a guard at the Tomb changes the guard, a tradition that has been held daily, 365 days a year, since the monument’s inauguration. The monument’s striking architectural features consist of stone tablets recording significant Polish battles, and a series of urns containing soil from disparate battlefields, symbolising the shared sacrifice of Polish soldiers. Beyond its poignant symbolism, the Tomb offers visitors a tangible connection to Poland’s turbulent history. The surrounding gardens further enrich the experience, immersing visitors in a moving panorama of national remembrance. Memorial plaques detailing the contributions of Poland’s veterans ceremonially repeat over centuries, making the site a living monument. The Tomb is publicly accessible, free of charge, and is managed by the Office of the Warsaw City Hall. It presents a peaceful space for reflection amid the dynamic life of the city’s capital.
