Guincho Beach
About
Guincho Beach, situated on Portugal’s western Atlantic coast just five kilometres from Cascais, is a dramatic stretch of sand that towers above the Sintra‑Cascais Natural Park. Its rugged shoreline, about 800 metres long, is framed by the historic Guincho Fort and offers sweeping views of the ocean and the surrounding hills. The beach is famed among windsurfers, kitesurfers and traditional surf enthusiasts for its powerful, reliable northern winds from June to August and steeper winter swells that attract competitive riders in December. The strong breeze and frequent waves mean the waters are not suitable for swimming or sun‑bathing, especially for families with young children. Guincho’s popularity extends beyond sports: the pristine dunes and sweeping cliffs made it the backdrop for the opening credits of the 1969 James Bond film *On Her Majesty’s Secret Service* and the 2021 film *This Side of Resurrection*. With ample parking – both free on the southern end and paid on the northern – visitors can easily access the beach, though it remains a natural, wind‑influenced oasis rather than a manicured resort.
