About

The National Palace of Mafra – known in Portuguese as Palácio Nacional de Mafra – stands as a monumental Baroque‑neoclassical complex 40 000 m² in the town of Mafra, north of Lisbon. Built between 1717 and 1755 under King John V, the palace once served as a royal residence, a Franciscan friary, a hunting lodge and today a museum that houses a world‑renowned library, a basilica with six carillons, and a rich collection of sculptures from the School of Mafra. In 2019 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognising its architectural splendour and the artistic legacy of the 18th‑century Portuguese court. Visitors can explore the royal apartments, the lavish gilded ceiling, the library with 36 000 volumes, and the stunning gardens that skirt the surrounding hunting park. The site offers an immersive glimpse into Portugal’s Enlightenment era and the grandeur of its colonial wealth.
