Duke of Terceira Garden
About
The Duke of Terceira Garden (Jardim Duque da Terceira) is a historic public park nestled in the heart of Angra do Heroísmo on the island of Terceira, Azores. Founded in 1882 to honor the war hero Antônio José Severim de Noronha, the 1.8‑hectare green oasis blends French geometric and English Romantic design with local Azorean elements, offering an oasis of calm amid the city’s lively streets. The garden showcases an impressive collection of endemic and exotic flora, including Araucaria, eucalyptus, phoenix palms, and indigenous ferns, arranged in terraces that echo the island’s volcanic terraces. Visitors can stroll along stone pathways, gaze at the lush tropical foliage, and see rare botanical specimens that reflect the region’s diverse horticultural history. Key attractions include the Alto da Memória, a commanding hilltop terrace that provides sweeping views of Angra do Heroísmo; the historic Tanque do Preto, an old irrigation reservoir that lends the park a tranquil atmosphere; and the “Filho Pródigo” azulejo panels, four beautifully preserved 18th‑century tiles depicting the parable of the prodigal son. A small playground area offers recreation for families and a charming spot for children to enjoy nature. Admission is free and the garden is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, making it an accessible cultural and natural escape for locals and tourists alike.
