About
The Museu Dr. Joaquim Manso – Museu da Nazaré is a cultural landmark located on the historic site of the Sítio in the picturesque coastal town of Nazaré. Housed in a former home of the renowned journalist Joaquim Manso, the museum showcases the rich maritime heritage of the region, displaying a diverse collection of ethnographic artifacts, archaeological finds, and exquisite paintings that chronicle the evolution of fishing traditions. Situated in the heart of Nazaré, the museum offers visitors a unique glimpse into the everyday life of local fishermen, the maritime customs that have shaped the town, and the traditional costume of our lady saints. Its exhibitions guide visitors through the cultural identity of Nazaré – from the iconic fishing gear to the vibrant festivals that celebrate its seafaring past. Admission is free for all visitors, thanks to the Cultural and Heritage Center (DRCC) policy. Visitors can explore the museum on their own or join a guided tour, which can be booked in advance for a modest fee. Guided tours are available in Portuguese and English and typically attract groups of up to 25 people; timings are 30–60 minutes according to the schedule. The museum’s operating hours are Tuesday through Friday, from 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:30. It remains close for the weekend, Monday, and public holidays, giving visitors plenty of time to plan a trip during the week for a relaxed, informative experience.
