Chapel of Bones
About
The Chapel of Bones, or Capela dos Ossos, is a haunting 18th‑century Roman‑Catholic shrine located at the entrance of the magnificent Church of St. Francis in Évora, Portugal. The chapel’s interior is a macabre gallery of about 5,000 human skulls and bones, artfully arranged in intricate patterns on the walls, pillars, and ceilings. Light filters through three small openings, illuminating the skeleton‑lined walls and the white painted ceiling adorned with death motifs. Inside the chapel hangs a poem that urges travelers to pause and reflect on mortality. Though modest in size—just under 20 m long and 11 m wide—the space offers a profound, almost spiritual experience that invites contemplation of life, death, and the passage of time. The chapel is freely accessible to visitors, making it a must‑visit stop for anyone traveling through the historic centre of Évora.
