About
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, situated in the historic Sé quarter of Funchal, is a striking monument of Madeira’s early colonial era. Constructed between 1486 and 1514 on the site of the island’s first municipal church, the cathedral masterfully blends Gothic austerity with Manueline ornamentation, featuring stonework carved from local volcanic material. Its soaring nave, intricate cedar choir stalls, and the silver processional cross donated by King Manuel I draw visitors into a rich tapestry of religious and architectural heritage.
