Palheiro Gardens
About
Nestled 500 metres above sea level in the hills east of Funchal, Palheiro Gardens is a historic estate admired for its rare plant collections and peaceful setting. Dating back to the early 19th century, the estate was established by the Count of Carvalhal, who introduced camellias to Madeira – a legacy still visible today in the garden’s extensive camellia collection. Now cared for by the Blandy family, the 14-hectare estate is home to around 650 plant species, including a wide variety of tropical and subtropical plants that thrive in its cool, misty microclimate. Visitors can explore themed areas such as Camellia Avenue, the Rose Garden, Sunken Garden, Main Garden, Long Border, and Jardim da Senhora – complete with a Tea House offering a calm moment amid the blooms. With sweeping views over Funchal and a serene atmosphere, Palheiro Gardens is ideal for nature lovers and plant enthusiasts seeking a blend of tranquillity and historic charm.
