About
The São Vicente Caves (Grutas de São Vicente) are an impressive volcanic lava tube system on Madeira’s rugged western coast, stretching roughly 1 km inland and formed over 890,000 years ago. Visitors can explore a series of well‑lit chambers filled with natural stalactites, stalagmites and intriguing lava formations, offering a fascinating glimpse into the island’s fiery past. Admission is €8 per adult (no child tickets recorded) and a small gratuity is appreciated for conservation efforts. Although the caves are currently closed for temporary refurbishment, they opened to the public in 1996 and remain a unique geological attraction for nature and history lovers alike.
