Gruta das Torres
About
Located on the western flank of Pico Island in the Azores, Gruta das Torres is Portugal’s longest lava cave, stretching over 5 km underground. The site features a stunning visitor centre built from basalt and awarded the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture in 2007, which serves as a gateway for guided tours that showcase the cave’s dramatic lava tubes, stalactites, stalagmites and lava benches. With a temperature maintained at a constant 16 °C, visitors experience a unique subterranean landscape that has earned the cave national natural monument status and inclusion in the Azores Geopark. The guided tours, scheduled throughout the day in the summer months, combine interactive presentations in English and Portuguese with expert-led exploration of the first 450 m of the tunnel. The combination of its geological significance, award‑winning architecture, and immersive visitor experience makes Gruta das Torres a must‑visit attraction for nature enthusiasts, families, and cultural explorers alike.
